Phoetry Blog

This blog is about combining poetry and photography as an integrated medium called phoetry.

I'm Dan Ward and I love photography. For over 40 years, I have attempted to take photographs that communicate a message and are more than just snapshots. Whether luck or skill, occasionally some of my photos have touched.

In the Fall of 2007, a friend of the family, Dr. Catherine Sweeney Burton, shared one of her haikus with me. I was struck by how closely her poem seemed to match one of my photos. As an experiment, we combined the two into an integrated image and realized the product was something stronger than the two elements that went into it.

We've continued to experiment with phoetry - this integrated poetry/photography concept. Thus far, we have published two books of this collaborative effort which are available via the print on demand publisher, Blurb.

I'm hoping others who share an interest in phoetry will join us in a discussion of this emerging media. Please use the comments option to share your thoughts, suggestions, ideas and efforts in this area.

Have you experimented with combining poems and photos?
Does one come before the other?
